Replit makes OpenAI the default for Replit Agent, and Claude stays selectable
Replit's CEO said on stage that Replit was no longer working with Anthropic, then clarified that OpenAI is now the default provider and users can still pick Claude.
At TechCrunch Disrupt on October 16, Replit CEO Amjad Masad said the company was no longer working with Anthropic, citing cost, partnership and performance. He said Replit's internal and public benchmarks show OpenAI's Sol and Astra models consistently doing better at building vibe-coded apps from scratch.
Masad later clarified on X and to TechCrunch that "Replit remains model agnostic." Users can still choose Anthropic's Claude and other supported models, but OpenAI is now the preferred partner powering Replit Agent. A person familiar with the Anthropic partnership told TechCrunch it was still in place. TechCrunch notes that a Replit blog post in late September listed Claude models running in Replit Agent's production environment, and that Masad said Replit had been a top-five Anthropic customer until recently.
Masad also said enterprise contracts went from about 2% of Replit's revenue last year to about 15% this year, and that more than half of revenue is now B2B.
Why it matters for builders
If you build on Replit Agent and never opened the model picker, the model behind your builds may have changed without you changing a setting.
